I tried to be offended and indignant to the following, I tried to say, “There’s no need to trumpet your disdain,” but in the end I just decided it was really funny.
I understand the hate towards wedding registries, because largely they seem to serve as a way to request, without shame, things that if you bought for yourself would deeply embarrass you. Or that you would look at the price tag and put back on the shelf. I’d like to think we’ve avoided this… but, who knows?
I think a good wedding includes this and no more:
1. an exchange of vows between two people who genuinely love AND want to commit to each other
2. a group of family and friends who are essentially there to say, “We hear you, we support you, your commitment has our blessing.”
Everything else is extraneous. The cake, the music, the gifts, the propriety, the class, a spiffy website… not needed! We aren’t trying to show you anything about ourselves but #1 and what we want from our guests is simply #2.
course, we’ll still take the spoons!
