oughta be in pictures

Part of the vibrant Richmond and DC ‘Zine scene, Steph was once called upon to model in an fashion shoot for Artcade Magazine. Alas for her adoring public, the photos never hit the stands, but she did meet shutterbug Nick Kirkpatrick.

When it came time to hire a photographer for our wedding, we quickly found that it is easy to drop of lot of cash for stiff poses, Vaselined lenses and Photoshopped buffoonery. We both are of the opinion that the best photographs of people are captured on the fly, but also agree that good “natural” photography is also the hardest to take. We also don’t need all the albums and web galleries and other gewgaws that come with hiring someone in the biz. We wanted someone yet unhampered by all the “rules” of wedding photography, but who wasn’t going to give us “indie wedding” snaps for our kids to make fun of us with later in our coming decrepitude. So we decided to go with an up-and-coming student photographer whose work showed class; natch, Mr. Kirkpatrick.

We got pretty far in our negotiations with Nick, but then life intervened and he decided he needed to stay in Demark for the summer to pursue his studies. If we were in Denmark, we’d probably stay there too, so we can’t blame the lad. But being a man of his word, Nick guaranteed us a replacement at the same rate. And it seems Nick has friends in high places…
